Kevin H. Johnson
Dean of Students

Hometown: Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica

Mr. Johnson is entering his sixth year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for a total of 12 years.  He attended the International University of the Caribbean where he received a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, and Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a Master’s in Educational Leadership.


Mary Rusher
Business/Finance Manager

Hometown: Chattanooga, TN

Ms. Mary came to Wilmington Prep in the fall of 2010. Prior to joining the school she had been active in Wilmington area business and real estate since 1981. She studied at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and Chattanooga - and recently attended Cape Fear Community College.


Deanna Beter
EC Teacher

Hometown: Jupiter, Flordia

This is Mrs. Beter's first year at Wilmington Prep and her 5th year as an educator. She graduated from the University of Flordia with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and is certified K-6. Mrs. Beter also holds a Bachelor's in Exceptional Children K-12 and certifications in Reading and English as Second Language. 


Sonya Horton
Administration/Physical Education 

Hometown: Wilson, NC 

This is Ms. Horton's first year at Wilmington Prep and her 10th year as an educator. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Health from Barton College and a Master's Degree in Administration and Supervision from the Univerisity of Phoenix. She received her National Boards in 2010. 

 


Amy Woodcock
Kindergarten Teacher

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

This is Ms. Woodcock’s second year at Wilmington Prep Academy and her 6th year as an educator. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Wilmington and is certified to teach grades K-6.

 


Harla Johnson
Kindergarten Teacher

Hometown: Westmoreland, Jamaica

Mrs. Johnson is beginning her fourth year at Wilmington Prep and her seventh year as an educator.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the International University of the Caribbean and a Master's Degree in Education from UNC-Wilmington. 


Kathryn Wuest
3rd & 4th Grade Math and Science Teacher

Hometown: Moorehead City, NC

This is Ms. Wuest’s second year at Wilmington Prep Academy and her 6th year as an educator. She attended UNC-Wilmington where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology and is certified to teach K-6.


Jenny Kennen
3rd & 4th Grade English Language
Arts and Social Studies Teacher

Hometown: Morehead City, NC

Mrs. Kennen has been an educator for five years and has spent all five at Wilmington Prep.  She attended UNC-Wilmington where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and earned her K-6 certification.

 


Deborah Ziglar
2nd Grade Teacher

Hometown: Eden, NC

Mrs. Ziglar is beginning her fourth year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for a total of eleven years.  She attended Greensboro College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

 


Ashley Castillo
1st Grade Teacher

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Mrs. Castillo is beginning her sixth year as an educator and has been here at Wilmington Prep all six years.  While attending East Carolina University, she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Education with a concentration in Child Studies.  She is currently pursuing her K-12 Reading license.


Jimmy Richardson
5th & 6th Grade Math and Science Teacher

Hometown: Newport News, VA

Mr. Richardson has been an educator for eighteen years years and is entering his fouth year at Wilmington Prep.  He attended Old Dominion University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Virginia CommonWealth University

Arts and Social Studies Teacher

Hometown: Denver, CO

Mrs. England has been with Wilmington Prep since 2014 and has been working with children since 2004. She attended Mesa State University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.


Joseph Gallene
7th & 8th Grade English Language
Arts and Social Studies Teacher

Hometown: Freehold, NJ

This is Mr Gallene's first year at Wilmington Preparatory Academy and first year as an educator. He graduated from University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in middle grades education with concentrations in social studies and language arts.


Danielle Pollard
7th & 8th Grade Math and Science Teacher

Hometown: Lewes, Delaware

This is Ms. Pollard's first year at Wilmington Prep and her first year as an educator. She received her Bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education: Math and Science from the UNC-Wilmington. 


 
Sheri Welsh

This is Ms. Welsh's first year at Wilmington Prep and her 10th year as an educator. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from East Carolina University. She is certified to teach Art K-12 and Elementary Education K-6. 


Alba Rosa
Kindergarten Classroom Assistant; Monitor

Hometown: San Salvador, El Salvador

This is Mrs. Rosa ’s 4th year at Wilmington Prep Academy and her first in a full-time staff role. She has 18 previous years of childcare experience.

Wilmington Preparatory Academy is a public charter school located in Wilmington, NC.      Like all charter schools in the state, WPA is publicly funded and as such is absolutely free for residents of North Carolina. Admission to WPA is by lottery: open enrollment begins in early January and ends in late February, after which the lottery is held. Wilmington Preparatory Academy does not discriminate regarding admissions.

The Academy opened its doors in 2007 with a mission to offer a high quality base of literacy, global knowledge and life skills to prepare K-8 youths for college and life beyond. Like WPA's founders, present leadership and staff strive to maximize the potential of every student.
