WPA students are enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis, or by lottery.
Overflow applicants will be placed on a waiting list.

Kevin H. Johnson
Dean of Students

Hometown: Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica

Mr. Johnson is entering his fourth year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for a total of 10 years.  He attended the International University of the Caribbean where he received a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, and Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a Master’s in Educational Leadership.



Mary Rusher
Business/Finance Manager

Hometown: Chattanooga, TN

Ms. Mary came to Wilmington Prep in the fall of 2010. Prior to joining the school she had been active in Wilmington area businesses and real estate since 1981. She studied at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and Chattanooga - and recently attended Cape Fear Community College.



Gail Wakeford
EC Director

Hometown: Mystic, CT

Ms. Wakeford is entering her fourth year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for a total of 29 years.  She attended Eastern Connecticut State College where she received a Bachelor’s in Modern Languages, and Florida International University where she received a Master’s in Special Education.  She is certified for K-12 Special Education/Cross Curriculum.



Brendan Heffernan
Operations Coordinator

Hometown: Syracuse, NY

Mr. Heffernan is entering his 2nd year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for 5 years prior.  Mr. Heffernan attended Oswego State University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting/Mass Communications and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education with a focus in Social Studies.

 



April Ramsey Sanchez
Kindergarten Teacher

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Mrs. Sanchez has been an educator for nine years and is beginning her fourth year here at Wilmington Prep.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and is K-6 Teaching Certified.

 



Harla Johnson
Kindergarten Teacher

Hometown: Westmoreland, Jamaica

Mrs. Johnson is entering her second year at Wilmington Prep and her sixth year as an educator.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the International University of the Caribbean.



Lauren Fritz
1st Grade Teacher

Hometown: Greensboro, NC

Ms. Fritz is entering her first year at Wilmington Prep and her second year in teaching.  She attended Appalachian State University where she received a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education with a concentration in Social Studies.  She is K-6 certified.



Jenny Guist Kennen
2nd Grade Teacher

Hometown: Morehead City, NC

Mrs. Kennen has been an educator for three years and has spent all three at Wilmington Prep.  She attended UNC-Wilmington where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and earned her K-6 certification.

 



Deborah Ziglar
3rd/4th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Eden, NC

Mrs. Ziglar is entering her second year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for a total of ten years.  She attended Greensboro College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

 



Ashley Tew Castillo
3rd/4th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Mrs. Castillo is entering her fourth year as an educator and has been here at Wilmington Prep all four years.  While attending East Carolina University, she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Education with a concentration in Child Studies.  She is currently pursuing her K-12 Reading license.



Jimmy Richardson
5th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Newport News, VA

Mr. Richardson has been an educator for fifteen years and is entering his second year at Wilmington Prep.  He attended Old Dominion University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.



Madison Roe
6th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Omaha, NE

Ms. Roe is entering her first year teaching and her first year here at Wilmington Prep. She attended Arizona State University where she received her Bachelor's in Psychology & Child Development. She then attended the University of Phoenix where she earned her Master's in Elementary Education.



Kristen Albers
7th/8th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Milpitas, CA

Ms. Albers is returning for her third year at Wilmington Prep and has been teaching for a total of 4 years.  She attended San Jose State University where she received her Bachelor’s in Theatre Arts, and she also attended UNC-Wilmington where she received her Certification for Middle Grades English and Social studies.



Catharine Knapp
7th/8th Grade Teacher

Hometown: Akron, OH

Ms. Knapp is entering her second year at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator a total of six years.  She received a Bachelor’s in Middle Education from the University of Akron and earned a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. She is licensed in Math, Science, English, Reading, and AIG.



Della Quinn-Carter
Art Teacher

Hometown: Chicago, IL

Ms. Quinn-Carter is in her second year here at Wilmington Prep and has been an educator for eight years.  She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master’s of Fine Arts from Indiana State University.  She also received her K-12 Art Teaching License from East Carolina University.



Chateka Hankins
Kindergarten Assistant

Hometown: Supply, NC

Ms. Hankins is entering her second year at Wilmington Prep and has seven years of experience as a Teaching Assistant.

 



William Brewer
Head Custodian

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Mr. Brewer is entering his third year as Head Custodian.  He has previous School Custodial experience as well at Castle Hayne Elementary School.



Rhonda Suggs
Child Nutirition

Hometown: Wilmington, NC

Mrs. Suggs is entering her third year at Wilmington Prep and her thirteenth year in the field of child care where she has previous experience in food preparation.

Wilmington Preparatory Academy is a year-round public charter school located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Like all North Carolina charter schools, WPA is publicly funded and as such is absolutely free for residents of North Carolina. Students are enrolled by lottery or on a first-come, first served basis. We do not discriminate regarding enrollment.

The Academy opened its doors in 2007 with a mission to offer a high quality base of literacy, global knowledge and life skills to prepare K-8 youths for college and life beyond. WPA was founded with high aspirations for maximizing the potential of its students, and those same aspirations remain our motivating force today.
